A Swing and A Miss.

A Swing and A Miss.

Twenty percent or 30% of the women who take oral birth control pills experience depression and have to take medication for it. So the difference just struck me. They terminated this study once it showed 3% depression for the men.

Gather round boys and girls and I will tell you a story of love, lust, and whiny, whiny men…
Don't forget the moral of the story: Fail to plan ahead and you could end up trapped with two ginger future drug addicts for ever.
Don’t forget the moral of the story: Fail to plan ahead and you could end up trapped with two ginger future drug addicts for ever.

Once upon a time, a male birth control was found, one so powerful it “held the sperm count at 1 million per milliliter or less” and had an efficacy rate of 96%. The shot was similar to the female birth control shot Depo-Proveria,  with efficacy rates that were approaching par with this well established option. During a study on this clearly viable option, however, it was discovered that a wicked witch had cast a spell on the potion, and as a result men would have to endure the agonies of mood swings, headache, increased appetite and weight gain. Fear not, dear audience, the brave men of this research project were not subjected to one minute more of these horrors, as the study was halted before completion, and women once again were tasked with preventing all the births. As God intended it.

Ok, we all had a bit of a laugh, but this is a seriously sad subject. Young women’s lives have been cut short because they were taking the pill. One of the most dangerous risks to women of taking the combined pill is the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (2/10 000), which can be fatal. There is also an increased risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer and stroke. The advice from the regulatory agency? “The benefits outweigh the risks.”

birth-controlSo what gives? Why is it acceptable for women to continue to bear the burden of risk alone, while men are sheltered from side effects that their wives and girlfriends have been taught are a normal part of family planning since grade school? And, honestly, why coddle men like this? My male friends would gladly take a bullet for the women they love, why not let them take a shot in their ass for her, even if it comes with some breast tenderness and a few tears at the end of Forrest Gump? (She was the carrots to his peas. It’s beautiful, dammit).

Equality means equal control and equal responsibility, until this is achieved in regards to preventing unwanted pregnancy, we will never achieve that parity we claim to want so much – and we are so close. Women can die fighting for their country, and they can die working in the most dangerous fields along side their male counterparts… but they should not die trying to plan their families, not when it is in the place of a man having the blues, or a headache.

Kelly Ellard is a murderer, and, according to recent reports, she is also about to be a mother. She was granted a conjugal visit while serving a life sentence for the murder of 14 year old Reena Virk, whom she beat to death under a bridge when she was only 15 herself. She was sentenced  in 2005 to life in prison, a term of 25 years in Canada, with no possibility of parole for 7 years. She is now 33 years old and 8 months pregnant with the child of a heroin addict who is serving a jail sentence himself for breaking into homes to finance his addiction. Read more

*This was written on the second last day of my exile. I was in a pretty dark place. I have since had my admin privileges restored and am walking on sunshine.I will be posting to explain the details of how I lost, then found, my Science Pony self, but today I am focusing on trying to get some content together for all of you who stuck with me through the past week. It is appreciated, truly*

I recently had my Facebook page, Science Pony, stolen. It has been 5 days and so far there seems to be little recourse for regaining the page, which is refusing to moderate comments (allowing trolls to run roughshod over my work product) and  still insists on using my likeness which is maddening. I am not sure what kind of sociopath feels entitled to a year of someone else’s work, or to their dreams, but I hope that they have to live with their actions for years to come, and that somewhere deep down in their blackened souls they feel a modicum of guilt. Their morals are bad, and they should feel bad. Read more

Anti-Vaxxers – Please try not to be so evil (simplified)

A video of a baby with pertussis struggling to breathe through a coughing fit has been viewed almost 3 million times since it was posted by Australian mother Rebecca Harreman on November 13th, 2015. While many are rallying around the young family, offering support and compassion at this trying time, there are some who are attacking the video and the pertussis vaccine itself as you can see: Read more
